Iran: URGENT call to authorities to stop imminent executions PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010 09:53

Please write to the Iranian authorities calling on them to halt executions of nine people arrested in relation to protests following the disputed presidential elections. The Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) international solidarity network urges the Islamic Republic of Iran to halt the executions of political prisoners sentenced to death. The prisoners’ trials did not meet international or even national legal standards set up by the laws of Islamic Republic. The accused faced ambiguous charges of Mahrab, meaning “enmity against God.” Moreover, after the officially confirmed deaths of at least two while in detention, the Iranian public and the international community are greatly alarmed about the extent of torture used against Iranian political prisoners in an attempt to coerce confessions.

Iranian Women Fight Polygamy Proposal PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 February 2010 13:07

Global Arab Network, 1 February 2010

Iranian women’s groups and other rights organisations are fighting a much discussed proposed law which they say would encourage polygamy by allowing a man to take a second wife without the permission of the first in certain circumstances.

The proposal comes at a time when the country has been rocked by protests, in which women have played a major part, following the disputed re-election last June of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Although Sharia law permits a man to take up to four wives, polygamy is not widely practiced in Iran and women have enjoyed greater rights and freedoms than in some other Muslim countries. At present, an Iranian man needs his first wife’s permission to take a second.

Funding scrap is 'matter of life and death' for group working against honour crime' PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 December 2009 09:25

i-Volunteer, 6 December

When I meet Diana Naami, the director of the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation, it is only after I’ve negotiated a space in her busy work diary – only after she’s sure that I’m for real – so we can arrange a time. And, of course, I’m politely informed that the London location of IKWRO’s offices is strictly confidential.

Such precautions are not for nothing – they are not an exaggeration. Diana has received numerous death threats for her work among women from minority, primarily Muslim, communities and, she tells me, even been physically assaulted twice for defending a woman’s right to choose – and in the more extreme cases, to live – in the face of a rising tide “honour” crimes.

Cash crisis threat to victims of honour violence PDF Print E-mail

The Independent, 6 November 2009

Government pulls funding for groups that tackle forced marriage and murder

Funding for the front line organisations which locate and save the victims of forced marriages and honour killings has been slashed by the Government, The Independent has learnt.

Two of the country's most prominent non-profit organisations involved in tackling so-called honour violence are now reliant solely on public donations, including a charity that runs the only national telephone line for victims of forced marriages. The funding shortage is so bad that both charities say they will have to pare down or close key services unless more money can be found, which could put hundreds of vulnerable people at risk.

The Honour Network, Britain's only national help line for victims of forced marriages and honour attacks, has not received any Government cash since April, when a £43,000 grant from the Forced Marriage Unit ran out.

The Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation (IKWRO), a London based charity that specifically helps Kurdish and Arab victims, has just been told its funding would not be renewed next year. A £29,000 grant they won last year paid for a full-time Kurdish outreach worker who helped victims relocate to safe houses. The worker will now have to be laid off.

IKWRO suffers another funding blow PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 November 2009 14:14

IKWRO, the UK’s best-known charity advocating for Middle Eastern and Central Asian women at risk of domestic violence, forced marriage and ‘honour’ killings suffered another blow yesterday when the Ministry of the Third Sector abruptly diverted funding of £750,000 from 35 small charities under the ‘Campaigning Research Programme’, including IKWRO, despite the existence of a Compact. The monies will be reallocated to 15 larger charities through the Hardship fund while the smaller charities may suffer yet more losses in the difficult climate of recession.

IKWRO, along with many other charities, worked very hard to become eligible for this funding, which according to Ben Wittenberg, Director of Policy and Research, Directory of Social Change was awarded only to the ‘the best and most innovative campaigners.’ The decision has also been criticised by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Charities, Jenny Willott.

Susan Forrester: Obituary PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 24 August 2009 09:19

It is with great sadness that Diana Nammi and the staff and volunteers of IKWRO have to announce the death of Susan Forrester, IKWRO's fundraiser, in the hospice of St John's on the afternoon of Wednesday 5th August 2009. An Oxford University graduate, Susan had many skills and responsibilities. She was very competent in the areas of her choosing, most particularly film. She was very knowledgable about funding and her skills here were invaluable as she had experience in making applications that were complete, concise and succesful. Susan understood the vital nessecity of the securing funding for the sake of salaries, to support our clients, and to expand our services in the face of ever-increasing demand.
