Iran: URGENT call to authorities to stop imminent executions PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010 09:53

Please write to the Iranian authorities calling on them to halt executions of nine people arrested in relation to protests following the disputed presidential elections. The Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) international solidarity network urges the Islamic Republic of Iran to halt the executions of political prisoners sentenced to death. The prisoners’ trials did not meet international or even national legal standards set up by the laws of Islamic Republic. The accused faced ambiguous charges of Mahrab, meaning “enmity against God.” Moreover, after the officially confirmed deaths of at least two while in detention, the Iranian public and the international community are greatly alarmed about the extent of torture used against Iranian political prisoners in an attempt to coerce confessions.

Furthermore, the news of the executions of Arash Rahmanipour, 20, and Mohammad Reza Alizamani, 37, who were tried without presence of a lawyer  of their own on January 28, has sent shock waves through international human rights circles. The executions were particularly appalling because they happened publicly therefore further dehumanising the accused while simultaneously intimidating the public.  Additionally, on 1 February, the Iranian Judiciary Chief Assistant openly announced that “Nine more people are to be executed shortly”.

Women Living Under Muslim Laws joins other transnational civil society groups and organizations in calling for an immediate halt to the executions. We ask the Islamic Republic of Iran to honour its international commitments and to uphold human rights as expressed by its candidacy in the Human Rights Council (2006) and as a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

We therefore respectfully maintain that the Iranian state, as a member of the international community and the United Nations is obligated to uphold its international commitments and should respect international law to ensure that all of the arrested protestors receive fair and transparent trials.
